Got robbed or someone took a fancy to your bike? Don't panic! Vigilat ut resquiant. Which is Latin for: take a nap, we'll take care of it.

Amsterdam cops are user friendly. Most of them speak English (or think they can speak the language). If you get lost, don't hesitate to ask for directions.

The locals have a reputation for telling off the authorities, so the cops are used to it. That doesn't mean that Amsterdam's finest are softies. They don't have a short fuse, but when they smell a rat, they act accordingly.

The cops in Amsterdam drive around in striped white cars. They also patrol on foot, on mountain bikes and even horses (rare).

In case of emergency, dial 112 (toll free). O, the Dutch word for police is politie.
